KIDS First Political Action Committee

As part of a strategy to help education leaders become more effective advocates for children, the KSBA Board of Directors created the KIDS First Political Action Committee in 2004.  This PAC is a tool that will enable board members and superintendents to be involved in the political process.

Legislators are most directly influenced by their local constituents and, operating under the legal auspices of a PAC, KSBA can help facilitate the supportive relationships legislators value and remember when voting in Frankfort.

In a nonpartisan approach, the KIDS First PAC contributes only to the efforts of political parties to support their candidates.  The PAC will NOT contribute to or in any way endorse individual candidates.  KIDS First can contribute up to $5,000 to each political party during both the primary and general elections.

KIDS First is completely funded by voluntary contributions of KSBA members and staff, superintendents, school board attorneys and other interested education leaders and advocates.  In 2008, members of the KSBA Board of Directors have endorsed a contribution equivalent to the per diem for a single local board meeting, usually $75.  An individual may contribute a maximum total of $1,500 per year to political action committees.

The KIDS First board is comprised of 10 members who are local board of education members and superintendents.  The KIDS First board decides how funds will be raised and distributed.

KIDS First is administered by a treasurer who maintains all records for the PAC.  No KSBA funds are used to operate the PAC.  PAC funds reimburse the association for staff time that might be needed to conduct these administrative duties.
