The School Energy Summit featured optional tours of Norton Commons Elementary School (Jefferson County Schools) or the University of Louisville, which included UofL’s Conn Center for Renewable Energy Research.
Norton Commons was completed in August of 2016 and houses 780 students in preschool through fifth grades. The school has insulated concrete formed walls, an R25 reflective roof and spray insulation at joints. In addition, it uses geothermal heating, solar hot water, LED lighting and shared community resources.
The school has so far outperformed its energy efficiency expectations with an energy use index of 21 kBtu/square foot.
