SCHOOL BOARDS & STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Enhanced academic achievement through quality instruction is Job #1 for school boards. ASAP (Advancing Student Achievement to Proficiency) for School Boards is designed to assist boards and administrators as they act to strengthen student learning. KSBA offers local training on issues from re-design of board meetings to focus on student achievement matters to developing of criteria to measure the impact of board actions on classroom learning.

KSBA offers assistance through the ASAP for School Boards initiative to help local boards of education explore new ways to measure and react to accepted indicators of student learning. Elements of ASAP for School Boards include:

an ASAP toolkit of materials and examples of available data to help local school boards and superintendents develop their own initiatives;

examples of promising practices whereby school boards are able to support academic achievement;

a sample process by which boards may evaluate academic programs as well as progress on school, district and state student learning goals;

a model format whereby boards may receive scheduled reports from school councils on progress to meet state and local student learning goals;

examples of board policies focused on actions and standards to enhance classroom learning;

a calendar of student achievement data, budget and planning issues as well as topics boards and staff may wish to discuss.

a sample board resolution of expectations and commitments relating to meetings, actions and student progress;

options for student learning data which may be incorporated into the board's annual budgetary and strategic planning processes;

a sample board meeting agenda encouraging discussion of student achievement as it relates to board action as well as opportunities for student presentations on academic progress;

Additionally, on-site training is available by KSBA staff to individual school boards requesting assistance in fully utilizing district data, implementing new board policies and/or revising the board's agenda practices; and other KSBA support is available to school boards wishing to initiate on-going public engagement efforts specifically targeted at community expectations and needs relating to student achievement.
