October - 2011
Augusta (Independent) School involved its entire student body in commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. This was one of many ceremonies schools across Kentucky held.

Near right, eighth-grader Danielle Shackelford and ninth-grader David Tucker were among the band members who played at the event. Far right, Augusta’s younger students filed into the gymnasium carrying paper flags they had colored and held them while they recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

Students and adults took turns reading poetry and essays about the event and its aftermath, along with a list of facts about the tragedy. At bottom right, Eighth-grader Jacob Riggins read the poem, “September 11, 2001.”

In a gesture of solidarity with those emergency responders who lost their lives that day, the school honored Bracken County and Augusta firefighters, police and emergency services personnel, thanking them and presenting them with certificates of appreciation.
