Search committee named to screen Wilhoit successor candidates

It didn't make the mainstream news media last week, but the Kentucky Board of Education has begun the process of searching for the state's fourth commissioner of education.

On Thursday, the state board agreed to issue an RFP (Request for Proposals) for a firm to handle the search.  In addition, the following state board members were chosen to serve as the search committee:

  • KBE Chairman and former Marshall County school board member Keith Travis of Benton

  • Former local superintendent David Webb of Brownsville

  • Rev. C. B. Atkins of Lexington

  • Bonnie Lash Freeman of Louisville

  • Judy Gibbons of Lakeside Park (Kenton County)

Board member Jeanne Ferguson of Louisville will serve as an alternative committee member.

According to a KDE release,  a decision on selection of a search firm could come at the state board's Nov. 1 meeting.

A timeline approved by the board calls for the possibility of naming top candidates for the commissioner's job by March 2007.

Long-time KDE attorney Kevin Noland will serve as interim commissioner upon the resignation of Gene Wilhoit on Oct. 31.
