"A brighter future through better public schools"

Program set for KSBA winter conference, featuring new finance track

New and veteran school board members alike will find a variety of useful training topics at this year's KSBA Winter Conference, Dec. 1-2 at the Marriott Griffin Gate in Lexington.

Friday's sessions begin at 8:30 with a three-hour seminar by best-selling author Mike Schmoker on strategies to create schools where all students can achieve at high levels.  The session is being presented in cooperation with the Superintendents' CEO Network.

After lunch, conference participants get to choose between afternoon clinics on either school facilities or school finance.  In the School Facilities Seminar, topics covered will include facilities planning, funding, bidding, design, consolidation, bonding and the recently-completed statewide school facilities study.  This seminar will continue through noon on Saturday.

The School Finance Seminar is designed to help board members of any level of experience better understand their roles and authority when it comes to district funds management.  Among the areas covered in the clinic are budget calendars, the "secrets" of financial statements, internal controls, audits and hiring an auditor, and warning signs that a district may be having financial problems.

On Saturday, conference participants not in the continuing facilities seminar will again have a choice of sessions.

One session will give newly elected and appointed board members the basics of board service.  Speakers will address student learning and support, board meetings, the role of the board member outside the board meeting and legal information about the dos and don'ts of board service in Kentucky.

The second option will be in two parts: legislative issues and superintendent hiring.  Anticipated "hot button" topics for the 2007 General Assembly will be covered in a 90-minute presentation, while the second half of the program will focus on the critical steps boards must take when faced with finding a new administrative and instructional leader for the district.
