"A brighter future through better public schools"

Web seminars set on reorganizing school calendars, building board/superintendent teams

Anyone thinking about adding hours or days to the school year, or squeezing out more from existing schedules, should join the NSBA Center for Public Education’s online discussion, “Making Time: What the Research Says About Reorganizing School Schedules,Wednesday, Nov. 1, from 2 – 3 p.m. Eastern time.

Despite the advent of the “24/7” information age, school schedules remain modeled on an agricultural paradigm that’s well-suited for harvesting crops but has been outmoded for many decades.

But what should replace it? Block scheduling, year-round schools and other models for organizing school time have been proposed and tried. Which work best, under what circumstances to support student learning? What are the costs and the benefits?

Guest expert Eileen O'Brien, a veteran education researcher and writer, will answer your questions about time, instruction, and student learning. Post your questions now at http://discussions.centerforpubliceducation.org or join us online at the same address for the live discussion at the scheduled time.

Meanwhile, there is still time to get your board team scheduled for a live, 90-minute Webinar on school board and superintendent achievement.  On Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. CT, school governance expert Doug Eadie will provide a KSBA-endorsed workshop designed to increase the effectiveness of leadership at the district level.  Eadie is the author of 17 books on board and executive leadership, including The Board-Savvy Superintendent and Five Habits of High-Impact School Boards.

Last year, Eadie worked with the KSBA Board of Directors in establishing a new board committee structure designed to increase the hands-on involvement of the board members in the association's planning and services.

The cost to take part is $200 per site with no limit on the number of participants per site.
