"A brighter future through better public schools"

Celebrate American Education Week Nov. 12-18

The National Education Association has produced a number of resources to help U.S. public schools mark the Nov. 12–18 observance of American Education Week.

This year's theme, Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility, highlights the importance of bringing together educators, school staff, parents, students, and communities in a unified effort to build great public schools. The theme also reflects NEA's vision of calling upon America to provide students with quality public schools so that they can grow, prosper, and achieve in the 21st century.

Resources are available by clicking here to access the NEA online toolkit for activity ideas, templates, and downloadable materials. You can also download 2006 American Education Week poster art, logos and Web banner art.

To spotlight all the people who make public schools great for every child, NEA encourages individual celebration days throughout American Education Week, such as:

Tuesday, Nov. 14: Invite Parents to School Day. Encourage parents to spend the day with their child at school to emphasize the importance of parental involvement.

Wednesday, Nov. 15: Education Support Professionals Day. Recognize the secretaries, classroom aides, maintenance people, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, and others who provide invaluable services to schools and students.

Thursday, Nov. 16: Educator for a Day. Invite community leaders to serve as educators to get a glimpse of a day in the life of a school employee.

Friday, Nov. 17: Substitute Educators Day. Honor the educators who are called upon to substitute for regularly employed teachers and other school employees.
