Agenda set for Kentucky superintendents' Winter Conference
The search for Kentucky’s next commissioner of education and a look ahead to the 2007 legislative session and elections are among the highlights for the Dec. 3-5 winter conference of the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents.
The conference, at the Galt House Hotel in Louisville, opens Sunday, Dec. 3 with addresses by Kentucky Board of Education Chairman Keith Travis, Kentucky Education Cabinet Secretary Laura Owens and Kentucky’s 2007 Teacher of the Year from Shelby County Schools, Susann Burkhardt.
Monday’s program features the announcement of Kentucky’s 2007 Superintendent of the Year for the American Association of School Administrators’ national competition. The morning general session will include remarks by Interim Commissioner of Education Kevin Noland and Robert Sexton, executive director of the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence. That afternoon, KASS Executive Director Blake Haselton will give a “State of the Association” report along with remarks by Kentucky Chamber of Commerce President and CEO David Adkisson.
Breakout sessions three times during the Monday program will cover such areas as implementation of Senate Bill 130 (mandatory ACT testing), school facilities funding, the joint KASS/KSBA/KDE Voluntary Partnership Assistance Program for low-performing districts, opportunities for gifted and talented students, the Education Professional Standards Board, school council/superintendent relations, school energy efficiency and an update on district/school data from the Council on Post-Secondary Education.
On Tuesday’s final day of the conference, updates will be provided on the upcoming session of the General Assembly and activities of the Kentucky High School Athletics Association as well as a status report on the school funding adequacy lawsuit by the Council for Better Education. The main address, on the current political landscape in the state and its implications for public schools, will be given by Al Cross, director of the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues at the University of Kentucky.
