"A brighter future through better public schools"

April seminar at U of L to focus on designing safe schools and school campuses

It takes only one tragedy to focus the community's -- and often the nation's -- attention on the safety of children in school.  Registration is under way for a new class on that topic to be offered next spring by the University of Louisville's Institute for Community Security and Public Safety.

The two-day workshop, "Designing Safe Schools and Universities," is intended to show school administrators, architects, security and police officers, and school safety planners how to design schools to resist street crime, terrorism, and gang and workplace violence.

Other topics will include security technology, procedures, evacuation plans, disaster and emergency operations and use of campus police and school resource officers.

Sessions will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 23-24 at the Founders Union Building on U of L's Shelby Campus.

Presenters will be Randall Atlas and Michael Dorn. Atlas is a registered architect experienced in criminal justice architecture, environmental security design, counterterrorism design and infrastructure protection. Dorn has written or co-authored more than 20 books on school safety and has worked as a campus police officer, school district police chief and school safety specialist.

Fee for the workshop is $695. Group discounts are available, as are continuing education credits for architects and police officers. To register, call (502) 852-8577 or check http://www.louisville.edu/a-s/ja/icsps

U of L's community security and public safety institute, formerly the National Crime Prevention Institute, offers professional development for law enforcement and security workers and personal enrichment courses for people interested in safety awareness.
