"A brighter future through better public schools"

Don't let the season of "Ho, Ho, Ho" turn into "Uh, oh" if frigid temperatures hit schools over the holidays

With unseasonably warm weather leading into the holiday break for Kentucky schools, KSBA's Risk Management team encourages district leaders to take the time to review procedures with building principals to assure an uninterrupted return to schools in 2007.  Here are some quick reminders:

  1. Facilitate communication between building principals and maintenance staff on the frequency of building checks during the shutdown and the procedures for addressing problems related to heat and security.
  2. In case of inclement weather during the break, assure that snow and ice removal is in place for sidewalks and roofs, if necessary.
  3. To curtail vandalism and theft, assure that all doors and windows are secure and alarms are functioning.
  4. Take additional precautions for extracurricular activities such as ball games.  Assure parking lots and sidewalks are clear and appropriate levels of supervision are in place.

Within the next 48 hours, KSBA Loss Prevention staff will be e-mailing to superintendents of districts participating in Kentucky School Boards Insurance Trust (KSBIT) coverages a full winter weather checklist, including preventive steps before cold temperatures hit, actions to consider during ice and snow and a form that can be used for monthly facilities inspections.
