    Staff Trainers:

    Tim Holt and Kerri Schelling

Because of expanded training opportunities involving local school boards, KSBA identified a need to develop this group of board members to support this initiative.  The new cadre members are almost exclusively current school board members in districts all across the state.

The cadre members will work in one or more of three areas:

1)  They have been trained by KSBA staff in a variety of board development and governance workshops.  Cadre members will work directly with the board and superintendent to determine specific training needs and assist other KSBA staff in the delivery of workshops and specified trainings.  These sessions are scheduled at the request of the board and board member training credit hours are earned.

2)  KSBA is collaborating with the Kentucky Association of School Councils in the Partnership for Student Achievement.  Some KSBA cadre members will provide joint training to boards and school councils in reviewing student achievement data and how financial resources are allocated to address individual needs.  These discussions will lead to improved communications between boards and school councils and a shared plan of action to reach proficiency by 2014.

3)  Last year, KSBA joined with the Kentucky Department of Education and the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents to assist school districts that have been designated as Tier 3 for No Child Left Behind.  Some members of the cadre will take part in the program as part of the Voluntary Partnership Assistance Team.  VPAT will allow the three organizations to collaborate and provide a systemic intervention with best practices to boost student achievement in identified districts.  During the first year of the program (2005-06) seven districts participated. This year, an additional 14 districts will join the group and more districts may be added during the year.

As the VPAT program expands, KSBA will continue to recruit and train additional cadre members.  We encourage any local board member with interest in joining this group to contact David Baird at KSBA for additional information or call 1-800-372-2962.
