Kentucky to participate in International Walk to School Day
From
the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet:
Kentucky public schools and their communities are invited to celebrate
International Walk to School Day in partnership with Safe Routes to
School on Oct. 4, 2006. The event was recently expanded to Walk to
School Month to accommodate schools who cannot participate on the day or
choose to expand their event throughout the entire month of October.
With that said, select a day during the month of October that works best
for your school calendar. In the U.S., the focus will remain on Walk to
School Day with support for communities that choose to celebrate for the
length of time and dates that fit their interests and resources.
Some communities use Walk to School Day as a way to initiate interest
and momentum to support safer opportunities to walk and bicycle to
school. Many other communities use the day as a way to kick-off a Safe
Routes to School program. Safe Routes to School programs use a
comprehensive approach to make school routes safer for children to walk
and bicycle. New legislation has recognized the value of these programs
and is providing funding for States to establish programs which
encourage children to walk or bike year round. The Kentucky
Transportation Cabinet recently awarded $1.7 million to schools that
will help to provide safer walking and biking conditions for Kentucky’s
school children.
Find out more about Walk to School Day at
www.walktoschool.org.
Walk to School events can be as simple as a few children and parents
meeting to walk to school or they can include organized walking routes,
a press conference, participation by community leaders and more.
Planning advice, ideas and a map of participating schools are available.
Registration is free and available to individuals or organizations
holding a Walk to School event. By registering, users have access to a
variety of free downloadable materials, including certificates,
templates for printing stickers and a frequent walker punch card. For
five weeks leading up to Walk to School Day, registrants receive an
e-newsletter with tips and resources on holding a Walk to School event.
In addition, registrants are automatically entered into a drawing for a
chance to win pedometers and education materials sponsored by Walk4Life,
Inc. and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE).
It’s that easy!
