"A brighter future through better public schools"

Survey:Respondents overwhelmingly support matching KSBA board terms

A proposal to lengthen the terms of the 12 regional chairperson seats on the KSBA Board of Directors got a 90 percent "yes" vote among school board members and superintendents responding to an association poll in August.

The survey question was tied to last year's decision by the KSBA board to reorganize itself into a series of committees to increase board members' roles in the leadership of the organization.  Under that structure, board members (other than officers) serve on three committees: planning, program oversight and external/member support.  Board members rotate among the committees annually.  However, under the current KSBA bylaws, the board's 12 directors-at-large serve three-year terms, while the regional chairpersons only serve two-year terms.  A bylaws change was needed to adjust the terms to ensure that all KSBA board members could serve on all three committees.

The survey results were accepted by the board's External/Member Relations Committee this month and will be reported to the full KSBA board at its meeting Sept. 23.  After formal bylaws amendment language is communicated to the full membership, the board will make a final vote on whether to amend the bylaws at its November quarterly meeting.

If approved the change would take effect with the fall 2007 regional meeting elections.
