Tremendous response to inaugural KSBA First Degree College Scholarship offering

More than 200 students eligible for blind draw at $2,500 scholarship

Even by the most optimistic expectations, response to the KSBA Board of Directors’ inaugural First Degree College Scholarship program was off the chart.

A total of 126 of the state’s 174 school boards submitted the names of 231 high school seniors for the two $2,500 scholarships. There are 122 female students and 109 males in the running for the blind draw at the Dec. 6 meeting of the KSBA board. The selected recipients will be announced and introduced at the luncheon general session of the 76thKSBA Annual Conference, Feb. 5 in Louisville.

The scholarships will bepaid directly to any two- or four-year college or university upon receipt of a copy of a letter of acceptance to the selected students. The scholarship may be used at any accredited postsecondary institution, in state or out.

“I’m overwhelmed that so many of our local boards and their guidance counselors saw the benefit to this idea of a first family member to earn a college degree,” said KSBA President Tom Blankenship, a member of the Lincoln County Board of Education. “I hope this is just the beginning of an effort to encourage students and their families who have no college graduates to realistically consider a postsecondary degree as an important goal.”

KSBA greatly appreciates the financial support of the initial year of the First Degree College Scholarship Program by the following organizations:

  • Kentucky School Plant Management Association
  • Towing and Recovery Association of Kentucky
  • Codell Construction of Winchester
