Ky. Board of Ed to take up resolution endorsing KEAT school funding campaign; Tuesday-Wednesday meeting includes update on principal/teacher evaluations

When the Kentucky Board of Education meets today (Tuesday) and tomorrow, the agenda includes adoption of a resolution of support for the coalition advocating restoration of school funding cuts. Representatives of the Kentucky Education Action Team (which includes KSBA and KASS) are expected to attend Wednesday morning for the activity.

On Tuesday afternoon, the KBE has a work session beginning at 2 p.m. ET. After discussion of the board’s strategic plan, it will receive an update for board members on plans by two task forces and KDE staff on criteria for evaluating teacher and principal performance. A pilot program is under way in more than 50 districts, although the final evaluation instruments are still under development.

Wednesday’s agenda includes the following discussion/presentation items:

* Report on a public hearing on proposed changes in regulations governing the rules for testing and assistance for students with disabilities

* Proposed changes in KHSAA athlete eligibility and sports-season rules, including an earlier start date for several spring sports (previously endorsed by a majority of KHSAA delegates)

* Demonstration of KSBA’s eMeeting Service for possible use by the state board during its regular and special meetings

* Establishment of a “Kentucky Foundation for Education Innovation” which would become a vehicle to apply for foundation or other grant funding.

Both Tuesday afternoon’s KBE “study session” and the Wednesday board meeting will be webcast live on the KDE website.
