School participation sought for earthquake preparedness event Feb. 7

Submission

The Kentucky Division of Emergency Management hopes all Kentucky students will take part in this year’s effort to build earthquake preparedness throughout the Commonwealth. Schools are leaders in preparedness and your participation will set an example for many others to get involved.

Please have a representative register your school or district to participate in "The Great Central U.S. ShakeOut" which will be held Feb. 7 at 11:15 a.m. ET/10:15 a.m. CT.

The ShakeOut is a two-minute commitment for something that can save lives. Participating is simple. Individual schools or the entire district (the preferred method) can sign up at www.shakeout.org/centralus which has instructions and resources to support educators in conducting the ShakeOut. During the drill, participants will practice "Drop, Cover, Hold On", the recommended procedure for what to do during an earthquake.

The goals of the "ShakeOut" are to:

*         provide a sense of urgency about earthquakes

*         encourage participants to get prepared

*         practice what to do to be safe

*         learn what plans need to be improved

Registered participants will be given detailed information for planning their drills. Organizers are working to create age-appropriate resources for planning drills, promoting participation, teaching about earthquakes and preparedness, and educating families.
