KDE, Kentucky Department of Public Health to host Coordinated School Health Summit Dec. 5 in Louisville

Submission

The 2013 Coordinated School Health Summit, All In for Health & Academic Success, will be Dec. 5 at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Louisville. This summit focuses on forming local health and education teams to recognize the connections between health and academics, and will cover a coordinated approach to school health and provide team time to work on a coordinated approach to school wellness policy. The local health department will invite a school district to participate and jointly they form a local team. The summit is hosted by the Department for Public Health in conjunction with the Kentucky Department of Education and Kentucky Board of Education’s Health Subcommittee.

The keynote presenter will be Dr. Charles E. Basch, author of Healthier Students Are Better Learners and the eight Coordinated School Health Unbridled Talks. Basch connects “7 educationally relevant health disparities” and explains “how these impede motivation and ability to learn through at least 5 causal pathways such as: sensory perceptions, contention, connectedness and engagement with school, absenteeism and dropping out.” This sets the stage/foundation for establishing the connections between health and academics which, in Kentucky education, relates specifically to wellness policies and program review, including coordinated school health committees.
