In the first week of online registration, more than 400 education leaders already have affirmed plans to participate in the 79th KSBA Annual Conference, Feb. 27 – March 1 in Louisville. And that’s before hard- copy registration forms reach most board members and superintendents by mail.

Session B11 on Saturday, Feb. 28 from 8– 9:15 a.m. Title: Legislative Update 2015 (Academy of Studies Level III required topic “Legislative Issues/Current Topics”)
Join this session for a presentation and discussion of the 2015 session of the General Assembly. Participants will get an update on legislation and the behind-the-scenes scoop about bills, funding and other legislative priorities. They also will receive the latest materials and information about KSBA grassroots advocacy programs.

Due to the size of the KSBA conference and limited workshop meeting spaces, advance selection of specific classes does not guarantee admission to those clinics. Advance registration enables KSBA staff to ensure that the largest meeting spaces at the Galt House East are assigned to those sessions with the highest interest. Fire marshal regulations restrict maximum meeting room seating; after that is reached, additional guests will be invited to select another concurrent workshop.
In advance of the event, you may check the conference website (same as registration URL above) to see which clinics have reached their participant capacity.
All of the mandatory training classes – superintendent evaluations, finance and ethics – will be offered multiple times during the KSBA Annual Conference as well as at the association’s Summer Leadership Institute in July and Winter Symposium in December. During 2014, two seminars covering all three mandated training topics will be provided by KSBA in cooperation with each of the state’s regional education cooperatives. And more training opportunities are in the works for later this year.
How KBE rules on minimum board member training hours affect board members
The Kentucky Board of Education has established minimum training hours and topics for local school board members. The minimum number of training hours that a board member must earn each year is defined in KRS 160.180(5) and is based on the length of their board experience. A synopsis of 702 KAR 1:115, the accompanying regulation to this statute, is as follows:
· For board members in office as of December 31, 2014:
Twelve (12) hours for school board members with zero to three (3) years of experience, including three (3) hours of school finance, one (1) hour of ethics and one (1) hour of superintendent evaluation training each year.
Eight (8) hours for school board members with four (4) to seven (7) years of experience, including two (2) hours of school finance, one (1) hour of ethics and one (1) hour of superintendent evaluation training each year.
Four (4) hours for school board members with eight (8) or more years of experience, including one (1) hour of school finance and one (1) hour of ethics each year and one (1) hour of superintendent evaluation training every other year.
· For board members who begin service on or after January 1, 2015:
Twelve (12) hours for school board members with zero to seven (7) years of experience.
For members with zero – three (3) years of experience, these hours must include three (3) hours of school finance, one (1) hour of ethics and one (1) hour of superintendent evaluation training each year.
For members with four (4) – seven (7) years of experience, these hours must include two (2) hours of school finance, one (1) hour of ethics and one (1) hour of superintendent evaluation training each year.
Eight (8) hours for school board members with eight (8) or more years of experience, including one (1) hour of school finance and one (1) hour of ethics each year and one (1) hour of superintendent evaluation training every other year.
Board members have a full calendar year to earn their minimum training hours and to take the specific course requirements.
