How to gain notification of governor’s orders on lowering Kentucky state flag by schools, other public agencies

Last week’s order by Gov. Steve Beshear for the lowering of the state flag at public buildings to honor the slain U.S. embassy personnel led to inquiries about how schools can get such notices.

Currently, when the governor’s office issues such a directive, it goes to all state agencies, including the Kentucky Department of Education. Commissioner Terry Holliday in turn forwards the notice to all superintendents.

However, districts and/or individual schools also may sign up for the notice directly through the Office of the Governor’s website.

A “flag status update” Web page, located here  http://governor.ky.gov/Pages/flagstatus.aspx, includes an online registration to receive future notices.

The Web page also includes a link to information about correct protocols for lowering official flags. The page has information about special dates when flags should be lowered without a special notice, including Peace Officers Memorial Day (May 15), Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Patriot’s Day (Sept. 11) and Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day (Dec. 7).
