A full slate of quality training for board members and superintendents is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Dec. 5-6, at Lexington’ Marriott East in Louisville during KSBA’s 2014 Winter Symposium.
A first-time event – a “boot camp” targeting new board members – consists of a series of workshops open to all Winter Symposium participants but slated as a group for board members-to-be elected next month as well as others in their first year through appointment. The topics for the boot camp sessions include basics of school board service, two school finance courses and one each on board ethics and the board’s policy-making role. The boot camp classes will begin on Friday at 11 a.m. and run through noon Saturday.
For board members of all experience levels and superintendents, this year’s Winter Symposium offers a variety of additional topical clinics, also starting at 11 a.m. Friday and extending through 12:15 p.m. Saturday. Board members needing the new mandatory hours in school finance, superintendent evaluations and ethics can earn those credits, along with the following courses, all part of the KSBA Academy of Studies:
· Construction and HVAC decisions
· Community engagement
· Student health and academic success
· Creating kindergarten readiness
· Using student achievement data
· Energy efficiency in schools
· Qualities of effective school boards
· Superintendent effectiveness
· Board legal responsibilities
· Technology use in the classroom
· Effective communications strategies
The conference will also feature keynotes by motivational speaker and school administrator Jim Burgett at Saturday morning’s plenary session and author and humorist Steve Gilliland at Friday’s luncheon, which is included in the conference registration along with tailgating reception Friday evening – wear your team colors – and a continental breakfast Saturday morning.
All told, incumbent board members may earn more than 9 training hours, plus all of their requirements for finance, ethics and superintendent evaluations.
