Kentucky Education Television offers help online and through free video to parents in early childhood education

Submitted by KET

The first day of kindergarten – it’s a big step and significant milestone for every child.

As Kentucky schools have begun to administer a school-readiness survey to test kindergarteners' basic knowledge, social skills, and capacity to learn reading and math, the Kentucky Department of Education recently reported that only 28 percent of incoming kindergartners were prepared to succeed without additional resources and services.

Many studies have shown that high-quality early childhood education is especially beneficial to prepare a child to be ready to learn. That’s why KET is helping to develop young minds as a trusted guide for all children, regardless of their family’s income or background.

More than 40 percent of KET’s broadcast hours are dedicated to nonviolent, commercial-free, educational children’s programming. Our PBS Kids service is the No. 1 educational media destination for children in the nation with programs and online resources – including more than 22 mobile apps – consistently earning accolades for quality and effectiveness. This past year, Time magazine named  www.pbskids.org  as one of the 50 best websites, and the free PBS kids video app  http://pbskids.org/mobile/pbs-kids-video.html  was named by Disney’s Babble.com as one of the 50 Best Apps for Parents in 2012.

While children enjoy fun adventures with Elmo, Curious George, and the Cat in the Hat, KET helps them learn literacy, math, science, critical thinking, and social skills – all essential for success in school and in life. KET and PBS serve children wherever they learn, live, and play – on television, online, through mobile devices, and in the classroom.

We support parents and caregivers with research-based early childhood educational programs and resources. And our dedicated staff provides credentialed training and professional development for preschool teachers and day care professionals.

In order to help every child be ready for that first day of kindergarten, KET is working with community partners, child care providers, and families to bring learning to every Kentucky child through broadcast, online, and on-the-ground educational programs and services.
