With a Kentuckian serving as president and nearly 150 board members and superintendents registered, it won’t come as a surprise that there will be plenty of Bluegrass State flavor for the 2013 annual conference of the National School Boards Association, April 13-15 in San Diego, Calif.
Boone County’s Ed Massey is in the final weeks of his one-year term as NSBA president and will preside over the event at the San Diego Convention Center. He’ll have plenty of company from the Commonwealth on the conference program.
Before the conference officially launches, on Friday, April 12, KSBA Director of Board Team Development Kerri Schelling again will be part of the team leading the New Board Member Boot Camp. If you want to attend, this requires a separate registration from the overall conference sign-up.
During the Saturday, April 13 program, a team from Boone County Schools will present on professional learning communities and a “response to individuals” approach to meet students’ unique needs.
Sunday, April 14 will be a Kentucky-heavy day. Newport Independent Schools representatives will host a clinic on customer service. Eminence Independent (the most recent recipient of the KSBA PEAK Award) will present a session on best practices in district leadership. Montgomery County Schools will offer insights into workplace civility issues in public schools. KSBA Member Support/Communications Services Director Brad Hughes will be providing a “Learning Lounge” mini-clinic on using the social media outlets Facebook and Twitter. Hughes also will join NSBA Communications Director Alexis Rice in a full clinic on community and media relations.
And Sunday evening, KSBA will join seven other states in the NSBA Central Region for a mass reception. Kentucky attendees will join colleagues from Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront from 6-8 p.m.
Finally on Monday, April 15, Taylor County Schools will lead a session on performance-based education and that district’s zero dropout emphasis.
