Superintendents, board of education members, administrators, board attorneys, school resource officers and others in just about any local school leadership role have a chance at top-notch training and vital updates on school law and safety in a pair of KSBA-hosted opportunities later this spring.
The annual Federal and State School Law Update is on tap May 10 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Lexington. And one month later, the 10th annual Safe Schools and Communities Conference is scheduled for two days at the Marriott Louisville East.

Federal and State School Law Update
Hot topics this year include school safety, the new state restraint and seclusion regulation, and school board and administrative financial oversight recommendations.
The director of the Kentucky Center for School Safety will brief attendees on measures for making schools safer, while a school board attorney and former superintendent will explain how boards should manage their financial oversight responsibilities. Participants also will hear about the new requirements on restraint and seclusion of students and about new policy provisions required by state and federal laws.
Experienced school law attorneys, policy consultants, and governmental relations staff have a wealth of crucial information to share at this training event. EILA credit hours for administrators and KSBA Academy of Studies training hours for school board members have been approved.

Safe Schools and Communities Conference
Though the event’s name has been changed at times over the years, this year’s conference is again co-sponsored by KSBA and the Kentucky Center for School Safety. The 2013 conference will have more than 30 general sessions and specialty workshops ranging from new uses of technology to make schools safer and training for active shooter situations to building safety assessments, disaster response, bus accidents and sharing information through social media.
The $215 registration fee covers the June 10-11 training and a luncheon on the first day of the event. An eight-hour special training for law enforcement officers takes place on June 11. And a day-long mandatory training for D.A.R.E. officers follows the conference on the same site June 12.
A block of rooms will be held at the Marriott Louisville East (800-228-9290) under the name "2013 Annual Safe Schools and Communities Conference" for the nights of June 9, 10 and 11. Rates are $110 (plus tax). These rates are guaranteed until Friday, May 10 (pending availability), so please make your reservation as soon as possible.
