National superintendent of the year among speakers on agenda for Kentucky Association of School Superintendents’ conference

A North Carolina administrator who earlier this year was chosen as national superintendent of the year will speak at this month’s summer conference of the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents, June 19-21.

Dr. Mark A. Edwards, superintendent of Mooresville School district was honored in February by the American Association of School Administrators. He will speak  in two sessions on Thursday, June 20 at the KASS conference in Bowling Green. The conference starts on Wednesday and concludes Friday morning.

Edwards holds a Ph.D. in education from Vanderbilt University, a M.Ed. in administration and supervision from Tennessee Technical University, and a B.S. in education from the University of Tennessee. Before coming to Mooresville, Edwards served as dean for the University of Northern Alabama’s School of Education, superintendent of Henrico Public Schools (VA) and superintendent of Danville Public Schools (VA). Edwards has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the 2001 Virginia State Superintendent of the Year.

Under a theme “Leadership in Transition,” the conference agenda includes these other segments:

·        Carl Rollins, the just-retired chairman of the House Education Committee

·        Kentucky Lt. Governor Jerry Abramson

·        David Cook, director of Innovation and Partner Engagement at the Kentucky Department of Education

·        Jon Akers, executive director of the Kentucky Center for School Safety

Other sessions will include competency-based education, principal effectiveness evaluations, the Kentucky Superintendent Network and updates from KSBA, KASA, KHSAA, CBE and KASS’s legislative advocacy team.
