In keeping with KSBA’s emphasis on providing information to districts on timely safety and legal issues, we have put together an agenda of hot topics for our 7thAnnual Federal & State Law Update conference. The one-day event will be May 10 at the Embassy Suites on Newtown Pike in Lexington.
Given the plethora of recent state agency recommendations about district finances and board practices, the update will include a session on financial oversight and responsibility for boards and administrators, led by KSBA Associate Executive Director David Baird and Teresa T. Combs, director of KSBA’s Legal & Administrative Training Services.
With the renewed focus on school safety, this year’s event will include a session by Jon Akers, director of the Kentucky Center for School Safety. Akers will highlight new state school safety legislation, along with safety and security issues boards and school district administrators need to consider to keep public school learning environments safe.
The Federal & State Law Update will cover highlights from the 2013 General Assembly, including pension reform and EpiPens; a review of federal and state regulations will include the new Kentucky Restraint and Seclusion regulation, as well as important case law developments and attorney general decisions.
KSBA Policy and Procedure Service staff will preview how these new legal requirements will be reflected in the annual policy update, focusing on changes for students, district administrators and other staff. Attendees will learn more about how the state auditor’s recommendations on school district finance responsibilities have been incorporated into proposed new policy and procedure provisions that are recommended for school districts.
