Energy-efficient schools to be in the spotlight April 22 as Kentucky state government marks Earth Day 2013 Kentucky First

Kentucky First Lady Jane Beshear and the state Energy and Environment Cabinet will be honoring the greenest schools of the Commonwealth on stage April 22 in Frankfort as the focal point of state government’s 2013 observation of Earth Day.

The event will be at the new Capitol Education Center adjacent to the state Capitol from 10 a.m. to noon. An advance agenda calls for the following groups of schools to be recognized:

·        Kentucky’s 200thEnergy Star Schools

·        The state’s “Green and Health School” selectees

·        2013 Green Ribbon Schools

During the ceremonies, the winner of the Energy and Environment Cabinet’s “Capture the Earth” photo contest for middle school students will be announced.

Visitors to the event also will be able to check out informational booths and displays by agencies such as the state’s divisions of air quality, water, forestry and conservation, Department of Energy Development and Independence, the National Energy Education Development Project, the Kentucky Environmental Education Council and the University of Kentucky’s solar-powered vehicle project.

The event is free and open to the public.
