Pike County Schools’ Title I Program is gearing up to host a unique educational conference Nov. 17-18 at the East Kentucky Exposition Center in Pikeville.

More than 300 representatives from 25-30 school districts from all across the state are expected at the “Next Generation Learners: Learning Without Limits” Conference. The event will feature leading educational speakers, workshops, school showcases, entertainment, and outside agency and vendor booths.

“I’m so excited to once again have our district host this conference,” said Robert Osborne, federal programs director for the Pike County school district. It has been several years since the district has hosted the large conference. Osborne stressed that while Title I is hosting the event, it is not limited to Title I topics or schools.

There will be one general session each day and 35 break-out sessions over the two-day period. Dr. Gene Wilhoit, former Kentucky education commissioner and current executive director for the Center of Innovative Education at the University of Kentucky, will speak on “Next Generation Learners” at one of the general sessions.

Dr. Kelly Foster, the state education department’s associate commissioner of the Office of Next Generation Schools and Districts, will speak in the other general session on “Title I’s Role in Education.”

Other educators who will lead sessions include Dr. Julia Roberts of Western Kentucky University; KDE’s Assessment and Accountability director, Rhonda Simms; Linda France, director of Next Generation Learners at University of Kentucky; Kelli Thompson, student agency lead for the Appalachian Renaissance Initiative; and Morehead State University professor Melinda Willis.

The conference also will feature school showcases designed by various schools, informational booths by outside agencies and vendor booths.
