KSBA Winter Symposium Friday and Saturday in Louisville draws a big crowd

Board members, superintendents may earn as many as eight hours of annual training credit

Typically, KSBA’s winter training event draws its largest crowds in an election year, with new school board members needing to get up to speed on their duties, roles and limitations. This year’s Winter Symposium may break that mold with more than 175 board members and superintendents already registered for sessions this Friday and Saturday.

The conference, at the Downtown Marriott Hotel in Louisville, opens Friday at 8:30 a.m. and the final clinics wrap up at noon Saturday.

Online registration is still available here http://www.ksba.org/protected/EventView.aspx?id=7GB20UG2.

This year’s Winter Symposium will allow a participant to earn as many as eight hours of state-mandated annual professional development training. The agenda, designed for the veteran as well as the new-comer, includes such sessions as:

* Budget development and requirements

* Open meetings

* College and career transitional courses

* Liability issues and insurance

* Board fiscal responsibilities

* Employee/student relationships

* Parliamentary procedure at board meetings

* Savings through energy management

* Effective news media interviews

* Using the high school feedback report

* Board /superintendent working relationships

* The 2012 Kentucky General Assembly

* Trends in school facility design

Friday’s schedule concludes with the popular “tailgating” party of food, beverages, games and music. Remember to bring your favorite team jersey or cap to really get into the spirit of the event.
