New Safe Routes to School application cycle announced
Submission

Gov. Steve Beshear has announced that local governments and school districts can apply for a new round of funding for projects and activities that encourage and enable children to safely walk and ride bicycles to school.

The program, Safe Routes to School, is federally funded but administered by the Office of Local Programs in the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Department of Rural and Municipal Aid.

“Part of having a healthy lifestyle is getting exercise, and that includes walking and riding bicycles,” Gov. Beshear said. “The initiatives funded under this program ensure these activities can be done safely.”

Under the Safe Routes to School program, cities, counties and school boards can apply for funding for a broad range of projects and activities in close proximity to elementary and middle schools. Eligible projects and activities run the gamut from new or improved sidewalks, crosswalks and bike lanes to public awareness campaigns and encouragement programs near schools.

Applications are to be filed online and are to be submitted no later than July 31. Application forms and guidelines are available here Safe Routes.
