State's superintendents gather this week in Lexington for KASS summer conference
Many of the state’s 174 superintendents will head to Lexington Wednesday through Friday for training during the summer conference of the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents. The conference at the Clarion Hotel opens with training for newly hired superintendents on Wednesday while other participants can choose the annual golf scramble.
After preconference seminars on budget and finance planning and superintendent contracts, the meat of the conference begins at 4 p.m. Wednesday with presentations by Education Commissioner Terry Holliday; Charles McGrew, executive director of the P-20 Collaborative at the University of Kentucky; and Al Cross, director of UK’s Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues. The session will include announcement of the KASS 2011 Distinguished Service Award recipient.
On Thursday morning, Liz Storey, a KASS consultant will discuss the superintendent leadership network followed by presentation entitled “Reforming Grading Practices: A Morale Imperative” by Steve Ventura, a former superintendent who now works for The Leadership and Learning Center of Englewood, Co. Afternoon keynote addresses will be by author and motivational speaker Judy Urquhart; Daviess County Schools Superintendent Tom Shelton, with an update on the Council for Better Education; and instructional coach Bob Holman, co-founder of Align, Assess, Achieve, LLC in Worthington, Ohio, who will talk about diffentiated instructional practices and student achievement. At the end of Thursday’s sessions, conference participants will tour the University of Kentucky’s Center for Visualization and Virtual Environments.
The conference wraps up on Friday with sessions on college and career readiness work at the Department of Education, an update on the Kentucky Community Crisis Response Team and reports from agencies including KSBA, KASA, KHSAA and the Kentucky Center for School Safety.
