KSBA offers one-day workshop on student record confidentiality, public records for school personnel
Breaches of student record confidentiality can harm students and may result in civil liability damages against the school district and individuals. Also, because the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act is federal law, the U.S. Department of Education can withhold federal funding for failure to comply with FERPA mandates. And the resulting controversies may damage your school’s and/or district’s reputation.

Several KSBA services are collaborating to provide a one-day workshop on the hows, whys, ways and “No ways” involved in requests for information about students. The session will be Sept. 23 at the Clarion Hotel (formerly the Holiday Inn North) in Lexington on Newtown Pike.

Online registration at $200 per person is available here Student Records.

District administrators must understand which records must be provided to the public upon request and also must grasp the nature of records protected from public release under other laws. Many requests received by school districts may combine a request for open records with a request for student records. It is crucial that administrators learn how to legally respond.

Appropriate communication with the public and the media can influence how your school board, administrators, and staff are perceived by the voting public. Understanding how to place your district in the best public light can be critical to gaining public support for district initiatives.

The Clarion has opened a room block for this conference at the rate of $89 until Sept. 1; call 859-233-0512.
