District leaders with plans to build new schools or renovate existing facilities may be interested in the 2012 High-Performance Sustainable School Buildings Workshop, March 14-15 at the Galt House East in Louisville.

The event is sponsored by the National Energy Education Development, the Kentucky Department for Energy Development and Independence and the American Institute of Architects, Kentucky.

Attendees will learn about sustainable school design concepts and how they significantly reduce energy use and operating costs, reduce environmental impacts and provide a healthier teaching and learning environment. Collaboration is a critical component for a successful high-performance building projects, so the core design team is encouraged to attend--school administrators, school facilities personnel, architects and engineers.

Participants will visit Brooks Elementary, a newly constructed school in Bullitt County, and Cane Run Elementary, a comprehensive renovation in Jefferson County. Both projects were completed and operate below the average costs for schools in Kentucky. Project teams will identify high-performance features—both in the building and on the grounds—and share strategies implemented to capture energy savings while creating a green and healthy school for students.

Sessions will be conducted by professionals in school facilities and design fields and will include school officials, architects and engineers.
