KSBA Fall Regional Meetings underway, offering insights into new training for board members

On Monday night, Hazard Independent hosted the first of KSBA’s 12 Fall Regional meetings, opening the traveling road show that this year will focus on a trio of board training areas: financial management, superintendent evaluations and board member ethics.

During an hour-long presentation, KSBA Interim Executive Director David Baird, Board Team Development Director Kerri Schelling and Member Support/Communications Services Director Brad Hughes will give participants on overview of how the association has been working to implement Education Commissioner Terry Holliday’s mandate on board member training. The first-ever requirement on specific annual training for local board members has been placed in a pending state regulation by the Kentucky Board of Education.

Each regional meeting features a hospitality period followed by a dinner. At the end of the dinner, a video from the office of Gov. Steve Beshear will bring a message from the governor about raising the high school mandatory attendance age in two years. Six of the regions will have elections of new regional chairpersons to serve three-year terms on the KSBA Board of Directors.

While board members and superintendents are encouraged to attend the meeting of their own region, KSBA recognizes issues of special board meetings and driving distances when a district may be nearer to the site of a different region’s meeting site.  If local leaders want to attend a meeting in a different region, please contact the superintendent of the host district to confirm your plans and dinner reservations.

Here is the remainder of this year’s KSBA Fall Regional Meeting schedule: (Please note that some host districts are holding their regional meetings outside the district itself)
