From school finance and parliamentary procedure at board meetings to superintendent evaluations and school turnarounds, the 2013 KSBA Winter Symposium will offer a depth and variety of professional development for participating district leaders.
Registration forms for the event – Dec. 6-7 at the new Louisville Marriott East hotel and convention center (just off I-64 and Hurstbourne Lane) – are in the mail and online registration is available on the KSBA website. Check the Events on the home page at www.ksba.org or the Board Team Development icon at the top of the page for Winter Symposium.
Here’s a quick look at the sessions for this year’s final training opportunity of the year for school board members, especially those needing hours to meet their requirements under Kentucky law:
· School activity funds and the KDE “Redbook” – board oversight role
· From underperforming to Proficient – one district’s Unbridled Learning story
· School board fiscal responsibilities – advice from district finance officers – two sessions
· Maintenance practices for school athletic fields – a pro talks about soil, drainage and more
· Kentucky’s Next-Generation Superintendent Effectiveness – a panel of the players
· How to become a more effective advocate with legislators – tips from the KSBA lobbying team
· Facility planning and rules for the board – from the architectural and financial viewpoints
· Customer service for school front-office staff – improving how your visitors are welcomed
· Talking about school finance to a non-financial audience – making the numbers make sense
· Shared leadership for board members and the superintendent – building teamwork
· Active shooter threats in schools – moving past simple lockdowns to better safety actions
· Choosing an HVAC system – questions school board members should ask
· Managing the board meeting – use of proper, equitable parliamentary procedures
· Managing the board meeting – ways to create a forum for informing the community
· School safety – best practices and updates on new legislation
· The school board’s role in student achievement – how and where to impact through decisions
· Less friction in board/superintendent relationships – a veteran board member/trainer shares
· Reducing risks that can drive insurance losses and premiums – panel of experts
All of these workshops are 75 minutes. The program also includes:
· Friday lunch keynote by Chicago native and international speaker Laurie Guest, whose presentation focuses on “managing your mental caffeine”
· Saturday morning plenary session on the 2014 General Assembly with a panel, including key legislators
· Saturday special seminar on talking to the press – a three-hour, hands-on training for superintendents and board members who want to build their media message skills
Registration is $195 per person, which includes the continental breakfast on Saturday. The Friday luncheon session has a $15 charge. Lodging at the Louisville Marriott East is available for $110 a night and must be reserved by contacting the hotel at 800-228-9290.
All general sessions and workshops are approved for state training hours for board members. Most are also included in the KSBA Academy of Studies.

Share Your Success exhibits at KSBA Winter Symposium in December
One change in this year’s KSBA Winter Symposium is the relocation to that event of the school district Share Your Success exhibits.
Share Your Success is an opportunity for districts to present an outstanding local educational initiative in a free booth space. The move from the KSBA annual conference to the Winter Symposium is designed to give participants and exhibitors more time to show-and-tell-and-talk in the atmosphere of the smaller event.
The exhibits will be open on Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and Saturday from 7:15 a.m. to noon.
A few spaces remain available, allotted on a first-applied, first-accepted basis. The deadline to submit a proposal is Nov. 8.
