Getting ready for the 2014 KSBA Annual Conference: Register today for your spot (not to mention your room)

It’s not just the start of the 2014 General Assembly that has KSBA buzzing with even more activity than usual: The KSBA Annual Conference is just three weeks away.

Using the theme "Kentucky Public Schools - Creating Next-Generation Leaders," the three-day event promises to be packed with quality training, exceptional speakers and perhaps the year’s greatest opportunity for education leaders to exchange ideas.

For an expanded look at this year’s conference, check out this months’ KSBA FYI video on the home page of our website at www.ksba.org.

A trio of keynote speakers has been lined up to engage conference participants:

      · Harvey Alston, one of America’s most sought-after and funniest motivational speakers, returns for the Opening General Session at 1 p.m. Friday. A former K-12 and postsecondary administrator and educator, Alston brings a message backed by more than 40 years’ experience in various aspects of teaching and leading students.

      · Dr. Diane Ravitch, who brought thousands to a general session at last year’s NSBA annual conference, will be the sole presenter at Saturday morning’s 9:30 Plenary Session. A former assistant U.S. education secretary, author, historian, media commentator and professor at New York University, Ravitch is an unabashed backer for improving public schools who has a warning about some ideas being proposed to change the nation’s educational landscape.

      · Sgt. Matt Eversmann, our Sunday brunch speaker, is most widely known as the American military hero whose 18 harrowing hours trapped behind hostile war lines in Somalia were portrayed in the movie, Black Hawk Down. Eversmann focuses on motivating all people through values-based leadership. He speaks during the 8:30 brunch that follows a student-led, nondenominational devotional.

Awards:

Friday’s Opening General Session also features presentation of the F. L. Dupree Outstanding Superintendent and KSBA Friend of Education Awards.

The Saturday luncheon (doors open at 11:30 a.m.) will include remarks by Education Commissioner Terry Holliday and presentation of the third annual KSBA First Degree College Scholarships and the Kentucky PTA’s Warren Proudfoot Outstanding School Board Member award.

Friday Pre-conference sessions:

Five three-hour sessions begin at 9 a.m., offering detailed presentations on the Kentucky State Police active shooter training program, student insights into successful board meetings, delegating board meeting time to student achievement, social justice issues in education, and 21st-century board member leadership skills.

Remember that these sessions require specific selection on the conference registration form.

Clinic sessions:

Four sessions of 75-minute clinics on key school leadership topics are slated for Friday afternoon, Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon. A total of 39 clinics are being offered this year, including multiple opportunities for board members to meet the new annual state training requirements in the superintendent evaluations, school financial management and board member ethics. You can see the schedule and select your own agenda when you register online for the conference. The document includes a full list of all clinic sessions.

Business session and election:

The annual association business session and election/ratification of KSBA directors-at-large will take place at 4:30 Saturday afternoon. Come and here the candidate speeches by those put forth by the nominating committee..

Trade show:

The annual trade show and exhibits will be on the second floor of Galt House East from 11 a.m. Friday through noon Saturday.
