Kentucky districts honoring their board members during January observation of School Board Recognition Month

For the 18th year, Kentucky is observing January as School Board Recognition Month and KSBA is joining local districts in the celebration.

“The past several years have challenged school leaders – board members and superintendents alike – to support continued academic progress,” said KSBA President Durward Narramore, a member of the Jenkins Independent Board of Education.

“In 2013, Education Week’s Quality Counts report ranked Kentucky in the Top 10. Our school board members played a role in that kind of improvement. I’m proud to be a local school board member in this state," he said.

KSBA Interim Executive Director David Baird, who was a superintendent for 16 years, said school board members earn a public nod of appreciation for doing more than attending one or two meetings a month.

"It's amazing all of the hours many board members spend every month in doing their jobs for kids: official board meetings, work sessions, school events, conversations with parents and nonparent constituents, reaching out to legislators," Baird said. "And the new state professional development requirements – important topics as they are – will add more time on task for school board members. They merit this recognition at the very least."

Superintendents, students and local officials have begun marking the observation of School Board Recognition Month with ceremonies, often during the local board's meeting.

Thank you, Kentucky school board members, for your contributions to the lives of students and the future of our Commonwealth.
