The next edition of Education Matters, hosted by Bill Goodman, explores how schools can help students acquire the leadership skills they need for academic and lifelong success. “Growing Leaders” features a look at three successful school-based leadership training programs across the state. The program airs Monday, May 19 at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on KET.
The program includes a visit to Moss Middle School in Warren County, where students learn about leadership through “The Leader in Me,” a national program based on Stephen R. Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Warren County Public Schools has adopted the program in all its elementary and middle schools.
Another segment centers on the Carter G. Woodson Academy, housed at Crawford Middle School in Fayette County. This college preparatory program for African-American males in grades 6-10 infuses leadership skills throughout the curriculum. Students are encouraged to practice their leadership skills both in school and in their communities.
The program also travels to Buckhorn School, a K-12 school in Perry County, to learn about the Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP)—a statewide initiative sponsored by the Kentucky Department of Education that empowers students to use technology to address needs within their schools and communities. The program also follows the Buckhorn students as they participate in the annual statewide STLP convention held at Rupp Arena in Lexington.
In addition to these segments, Goodman will lead a panel discussion on ways that educators and parents can develop student leaders.
