Auditor Adam Edelen will host a Good Government Summit Nov. 15 in Lexington to strengthen accountability and transparency in school districts and local governments.
Public officials representing schools, cities, counties and special districts are invited to attend the two-and-a-half hour program at the Bluegrass Community and Technical College Leestown Campus in Lexington. It has been approved by the Department for Local Government as credit for those enrolled in the County Officials Training Program.
Edelen will be joined by U.S. Attorney Ken Taylor, who has prosecuted several high-profile public corruption cases in Kentucky.
The inaugural Good Government Summit held in October in Northern Kentucky received high marks from some of the 200-plus attendees. Public officials across the Commonwealth urged Edelen to bring the program to their regions.
“Recent scandals have focused the public’s attention on the bad apples, but the strong turnout at the inaugural Good Government Summit demonstrated that the majority of public servants want to do the right thing,” Edelen said.
He will be joined by representatives of his office, who will talk about governance for councils, commissions and boards; policies for sound financial management; and preparing for audits.
Florence Mayor Diane Whalen and Florence Finance Director Linda Chapman will talk about recovering from fraud. Florence’s former finance director was convicted in the early 2000s for embezzling $2.8 million.
The auditor’s office in recent years has conducted special examinations into state agencies, cities, school districts and special districts that have identified serious abuses of taxpayer dollars.
