KSBA Summer Leadership Institute to mix time to complete mandatory training with more speakers, sessions; July 11-12 in Lexington

The 2014 KSBA summer professional development event has been designed for two audiences: board members who still need to meet the new state mandates on specific training and other district leaders who want to build their skills by exploring new topics.

The Summer Leadership Institute, July 11-12 at the Marriott Griffin Gate in Lexington, will offer three-hour block workshops Friday afternoon and Saturday morning that will encompass training in each of the three required areas of ethics, finance and superintendent evaluations. An hour will be devoted to each area, enabling board members to meet or at least come closer to the state’s minimum requirements in all three topics.

Two keynote speakers are now confirmed for the Summer Leadership Institute.

      · Juli Burney, an award winning teacher, author and motivational speaker from Lincoln, Neb., is expected to focus on how board members, superintendents and other public education advocates can mix effective communications skills, a positive attitude and a little humor to get through difficult situations.

      · Dr. John Draper’s career began in an Alabama middle school math and science classroom, moved through two principalships, followed by several years as director of a statewide administrators’ group. He is now a consultant for the National School Public Relations Association, and frequently speaks on how local leaders can refute some of the myths of how public schools are failing.

A registration form with a full agenda lineup, fees and times goes in the mail this week to all board members and superintendents. Online registration will be active on the KSBA website www.ksba.org shortly after June 1. Hotel reservations may be made now by contacting the Marriott Griffin Gate at (859) 231-5100, and be sure to mention it is for the KSBA Summer Leadership Institute.
