Friday, July 11, and Saturday, July 12 will be busy days at Lexington’s Marriott Griffin Gate Hotel and Conference Center when KSBA hosts a triple header of training: the KSBA Summer Leadership Institute, the Kentucky Organization of Superintendents’ Administrative Assistants (KOSAA) and the Council of School Board Attorneys.
Online registration for all three events is now “live” on the KSBA website. Just go to www.ksba.org and pick the event on the KSBA Events calendar on the right side of the home page.
Board members and superintendents have been mailed a hard copy of the event flyer listing all of 30 hours (note: some sessions are concurrent) of training options at this year’s Summer Leadership Institute. Each of the new state-mandated training areas for board members (ethics, superintendent evaluation, finance) will be offered three times, including two back-to-back-to-back opportunities Friday and Saturday afternoons. Other topics on this year’s schedule include setting tax rates, the Open Meetings Act, school safety, performance-based instruction, the TELL Kentucky surveys, parliamentary procedure, board/school council relations, the Kentucky school assessment and accountability system, and college and career readiness planning.
Superintendents’ assistants will have classes running from 8:30 a.m. through 3 p.m. Friday. Topics being covered include new board policy and administrative procedures, problem solving, social media and school records, and leadership.
The summer meeting of the Council of School Board Attorneys will run from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday. Attorneys will be able to earn 4 hours of continuing legal education credits. The agenda will include presentations on these areas related to school law: an update on new laws passed by the 2014 General Assembly, Education Professional Standards Board reports, issues involving transgender students and schools, school guidance counselor privilege rules, Title IV, student discipline, and guidance from the USED Office of Civil Rights.
For more information, call KSBA and ask for Kerry Schelling or Tammie Conatser, SLI; Shannon Robinson, CSBA; or Kim Barker or Katrina Kinman, KOSAA.
