Board members, superintendents, others invited to Frankfort Feb. 12 for Kids First Advocacy Day; event encourages face-to-face with legislators

KSBA is again calling on local board members, superintendents, education co-op staff and other public school advocates to travel to Frankfort and be part of the lobbying effort on behalf of Kentucky schools. The 2015 KSBA Kids First Advocacy Day is set for Thursday, Feb. 12.

One week after the 2015 General Assembly resumes its short session, the KSBA Kids First Advocacy Day will give local leaders the opportunity to hear firsthand about elementary and secondary education bills and to interact directly with their senators and representatives.

Online registration is here. Registration is $50 per person and includes breakfast. The fee will be discounted to $40 per registrant for any district or organization registering three or more people. The deadline for registration and/or cancellations is Feb. 5.

The event schedule is:

* 7:30 - 9:30 a.m. Breakfast and training on lobbying and talking points

* 9:30 - 10 a.m. Conversation with legislative leaders at Capitol

* 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Meetings with your local legislators ##

* 11:30 a.m. Senate Education Committee regular meeting

* 11:30 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. Lunch on your own at Capitol Annex

* 2 p.m. House and Senate convene (gallery passes will be available)

## Before coming to Frankfort for the event, please call your legislators to make appointments to see them. Many legislators arrive at the Capitol well before 8 a.m. and have a full schedule of committee meetings. Please be sure to check with your senator and representative in advance to find a convenient time to meet. Contact your legislator by calling the Legislative Research commission at (502) 564-8100.

LODGING

A block of rooms has been reserved at the Capital Plaza Hotel in Frankfort at a discounted rate of $83 per night. Make your reservations by calling (502) 227-5100 and mentioning KSBA to obtain the discounted rate. The deadline to receive the discounted rate is Jan. 20.

TRAINING CREDIT

Participation in this event qualifies for school board member Level III Academy of Studies credit under the requirement of “Legislative Issues/Current Topics.” Sign-in sheets will be provided at the event.
