Proposed Owensboro Ind., Daviess Co. calendars not entirely in sync for 2015-16; county district would again start later, but both districts would share fall, spring breaks

Owensboro, Daviess County schools adopting 2015-16 calendars

By Keith Lawrence

Daviess County Public Schools will start the 2015-16 school year a week later than Owensboro Public Schools again next year — if the two boards of education approve the proposed calendars on Thursday night.

County schools don't like to start before the second Wednesday of August because their buses are not air-conditioned and the bus routes are longer than the city routes.

But the proposed calendars show that both systems will take the same fall break — the week of Oct. 11-17 — and the same spring break — the week of April 3-9.

However, city schools aren't scheduled to be in session on April 1, 2016 — the Friday before spring break.

But the county schools are, according to the proposal.

James A. "Ja" Wilson, director of student services, told the county board at a luncheon meeting Tuesday that the committee working on the calendar had decided to make that Friday a school day for the first time in several years.

City schools will start on Aug. 5, 2015, and will end on May 16, 2016 — if there are no snow days to make up.

County schools will start on Aug. 12 and end on May 20, a Friday.

If the Friday before spring break was a day off, the last day of classes would have been on Monday, May 23.

Both school boards are meeting on Thursday, and both are scheduled to adopt the new school calendars.
