Planning for Summer Leadership Institute full speed ahead; move to Louisville will include meeting of legislative education committee

Conference and lodging space availability issues in Lexington have led to relocation of KSBA’s Summer Leadership Institute to Louisville, but there will be plenty of the high-quality training that SLI participants are used to at the professional development event.

And a couple of new twists will be part of the sessions July 13-14 at the Louisville Downtown Marriott.

This past Monday was the deadline for submissions for individuals, groups, boards and/or districts wishing to fill one of the clinic openings. Board Team Development staff are now reviewing those proposals. But some sessions, linked to the KSBA Academy of Studies, are guaranteed, including:

* Orientation for new board members
* Superintendent searches and evaluations
* End-of-course exams
* The school board’s role in college and career readiness

On the heels of the annual conference’s well-received employer panel discussion on job skills they need from Kentucky high school graduates, another panel of employer experts – dealing specifically with career/technical job requirements – will present on Friday.

Saturday’s keynote address will be offered by Jim Bearden, an Austin, Texas-based author, trainer and motivational speaker who will address ways for boards and districts “to unleash the hero in your midst.” A decorated Vietnam War veteran, Bearden has been a popular speaker recommended by other school boards associations.

A special addition to this year’s SLI event will be the Friday afternoon meeting of the joint House/Senate Interim Education Committee at the Marriott. Governmental Relations Director Shannon Pratt Stiglitz has arranged for the committee’s regular meeting to coincide with the conference. The committee’s agenda will be released closer to the date of the event.

SLI space at the Marriott will be shared as in the past several years with the summer conferences of the Council of School Board Attorneys and the Kentucky Organization of Superintendents’ Administrative Assistants. Members of those two groups will receive agendas and registration information directly from the KSBA Legal Services and Policy and Procedure units, respectively.

As soon as the SLI registration lineup is completed, it will be posted online on the KSBA website under the Events section of the homepage.The Marriott reservation line is 1-800-266-9432 and the deadline for reserving lodging rooms is June 21. The special rate of $119 for a single/double, $129 for a triple or quad is good the nights of Thursday through Saturday.

Due to the SLI move to Louisville this year, KSBA’s Winter Symposium in early December will be held in Lexington at the Marriott Griffin Gate conference center.
