KSBA Summer Leadership Institute program set; special alert to attendees – time running out to lock up lodging at conference hotel

School board members and superintendents planning to attend KSBA’s major mid-year training event – the Summer Leadership Institute (SLI) – and who wish to stay in the headquarters hotel, the Louisville Downtown Marriott – must act quickly if they haven’t already made reservations.

The conference will be Friday, July 13 and Saturday, July 14. KSBA has reserved a block of rooms at the Marriott for Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, with the registration deadline being Thursday, June 28. There will be no extension beyond the June 28 deadline on the rate or the availability of the rooms.

The special conference rate at the Marriott is $119 for a single/double or $129 for a triple or quadruple lodging Thursday through Saturday nights.  The Marriott reservation line is 1-800-800-533-0127.

Program

Friday afternoon, early arriving SLI participants will be able to attend a meeting of the joint House/Senate Education Committee. The scheduled primary topic will be about success schools responding to their status as persistently low-achieving schools.

Friday evening’s plenary opening session will be devoted to the school board’s role in career readiness of its students. KDE staff will lead the session on 21
stcentury workers and how school boards can support the task of preparing graduates for employment as well as postsecondary studies.

On Saturday, Austin, Texas-based author, trainer and military veteran Jim Bearden will start the morning’s training with a presentation on building “hero-building cultures” of employment.

Morning clinic sessions will offer information on career pathways in business and health, legal orientation, closing the gap on success, avoiding pitfalls in school budgeting, leadership through teamwork, and changes within the Kentucky High School Athletics Association.

After a lunch break, two additional breakout clinic sessions are scheduled:

“B” session workshops will cover the state’s new school and student assessment and accountability system, maintaining energy efficient schools, the QualityCore program, setting bold district goals, career pathways in energy and the KSBA paperless, electronic meeting service, eMeeting.

After a short break, the “C” session workshops will include career pathways in the automobile and aircraft industries, facilities planning, superintendent searches and evaluations, developing teacher leaders and the results of one district’s superintendent/board team focus on college and career readiness for its students.

As an alternative on Saturday afternoon, KSBA staff will offer a three-hour clinic on case studies in risk management, detailing real-life situations in which school leaders dealt with staff and student situations that led to litigation and/or insurance claims against limited financial resources.

All of the sessions carry approved board member and superintendent training hours.
