Kentucky’s superintendents will be headed to Lexington next Wednesday through Friday to get face-to-face updates on education issues and a special workshop on how to help principals become change agents in their schools.
The Summer Institute of the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents is slated for June 13-15 at the Embassy Suites hotel in Lexington.
Education Commissioner Terry Holliday will speak at the opening general session on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Also on the agenda is Bill Goodman, host of KET’s Kentucky Tonight and One-to-One public affairs programs and its election night statewide broadcasts. That session also will be marked by the association’s annual recognitions of new and retiring superintendents, mentors and others being honored for their contributions to Kentucky education.
Thursday’s morning and afternoon general sessions will feature a two-part seminar entitled,“Building Leadership Capacity: The Role of the Principal as the Fulcrum for Improvement” by Brian McNulty, vice president for leadership development at the Englewood, Colo.-based Leadership and Learning Center. An author, researcher and trainer, McNulty is a former district- and state-level education administrator in Colorado. Thursday also includes a luncheon with keynote remarks by humorist Jeanne Robertson from Burlington, N.C.
Friday morning’s closing KASS session will feature a live, participatory demonstration of the CIITS (Continuous Instructional Improvement Technology System) by staff of the Kentucky Department of Education. KDE will be hosting a statewide webinar for principals on CIITS on June 22, so this will give superintendents some specific background into the online repository of school improvement tools, materials and strategies for classroom teachers and building administrators. The session will close with updates from representatives of KSBA and other statewide school administration-related organizations.
