Registration tops 260 for 2012 KSBA Winter Symposium training event at Marriot Griffin Gate in Lexington; some clinics closed

With less than two weeks to go, interest is building in the program at this year’s KSBA Winter Symposium, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 in Lexington. Registration topped the 260 mark as of Tuesday, Nov. 20. And some of the two dozen clinic sessions have been closed due to advance placement requests.

Nearly 30 hours of accredited training will be provided at the conference. Incumbent school board members may earn credit toward their annual state-mandated requirements. Newly elected board members who will take office in January also are eligible to participate, gaining valuable insights into their new roles and responsibilities, with the hours counting toward their first-year professional development obligations. KSBA has attempted to mail an agenda and registration information to all board members-to-be following the Nov. 6 election.

Nine clinics are pre-registered to capacity, but here are some of the topics with available space:

·        The basics for newly-elected board members (two sessions)

·        Parliamentary procedure for board meetings

·        Nutrition and the links between health and student learning

·        Bullying prevention and student protection

·        Geothermal wells and school HVAC systems

·        Relationships and boundaries between students and education professionals

·        The facts about charter schools in other states

·        What school leaders need to know about federal health care reform

·        Marketing messages about academics to the community

·        Environmental and energy efficiency in school design

·        School insurance and risk management for school leaders

Keynote speakers are Dr. Brooks Coleman, a Georgia legislator, on changing leadership roles, andDr. Gary Miron, professor of education at Western Michigan University, on school choice and charter school and education management organizations.
