The passage of Senate Bill 47 in 2006 changed the Veterans Day requirements for schools in Kentucky. Before that, all high schools in Kentucky were required to devote one class period to the observance of Veterans Day.

Now, on Veterans Day, or one of the five school days preceding Veterans Day, one class or instructional period shall be devoted to the observance of Veterans Day.

Students shall assemble in one or more groups, as decided by the school principal, to attend the Veterans Day program.

The program must be approved by the principal and, at a minimum, consist of a teacher and a veteran speaking on the meaning of Veterans Day.

To develop a Veterans Day program, Kentucky public schools are encouraged to seek advice from the Kentucky Department of Veterans' Affairs and veterans' service organizations, including but not limited to the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.  Schools may contacttheKentucky Department of Veterans’ Affairs at (502) 564-9203.

Meanwhile, there is no mandate but there is a huge opportunity to celebrate everything from positive test scores to new teaching-and-learning tools during the observation of American Education Week, which this year runs Nov. 11-17.

American Education Week celebrates teachers and school staff.  The 2012 theme, “Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility,” is a call for all Americans to do their part in making public schools great for every child.

During the week, education support professionals will be honored on Wednesday, and substitute educators will be honored on Friday.
