KSBA Cadre completes work on new Kentucky school assessment system; KDE releases Unbridled Learning video

Training team begins providing local workshops for board teams’ roles in new accountability system

By Jean Crowley

Springtime in Kentucky 2012 means a national basketball championship, dogwoods in bloom, horse racing in Lexington and Louisville...and student testing. With the new Kentucky accountability system – Unbridled Learning: College/ Career-Readiness for All – comes new state tests for our students.

The KSBA Training Cadre and Board Team Development staff met in Frankfort March 23 for a day-long training session. The Cadre was created in 2006 to facilitate training sessions for school board/superintendent teams on various topics.

Veteran members of the Cadre include Bell County board member Arlene Burnett, Gallatin County board member Rebecca Burgett, Woodford County board member Margie Cleveland, former KSBA Executive Director David Keller, McLean County board member Bill Lovell and former Glasgow and Raceland-Worthington independent board member Bill Sadler. The Cadre welcomed two new members to its roster in Melissa Bacon of the Fayette County board and Allen Kennedy, a Hancock County board member.

To help our school boards better understand these new state assessments and the leadership roles of the board in this process, KSBA's Board Team Development unit has completed the second module in its series of training sessions on the new accountability system.

This new two-hour training session – Unbridled Learning: Assessment for Next-Generation Learners – is designed for school board/superintendent teams to continue exploring the education reform in Kentucky that began with the 2009 Senate Bill 1. Participants will better understand how the leadership roles of the school board will help prepare students and the community for the new state assessments. It includes discussions regarding the achievement, gap and growth components of the new Kentucky accountability system and concludes with the board/superintendent team developing "talking points" for their community.

Members of the KSBA staff and Training Cadre are prepared to come to your district and facilitate this training at your request.

The $300 training fee includes all materials for the board/superintendent team, 2 hours of credit toward the annual training requirement for board members and EILA credit for superintendents and administrators.

For more information and to schedule your training session, please contact Jean Crowley [email protected] at KSBA at 800-372-2962.

New video resource on Unbridled Learning
From KDE / Commissioner Terry Holliday

The video of my presentation where I explain the new accountability model is now available for use with district staff and teachers prior to K-PREP testing and with other audiences for information purposes.  I encourage principals to show the video to their faculties to set the tone for the upcoming new test, and the link can also be sent to parents/community folks to assist in promoting understanding of the new system.
