Upcoming KSBA training opportunities for school board members, administrators with focus on school energy efficiency, changes in K-12 law
KSBA will be offering something familiar and something brand new this spring for school board members and other education leaders who want to beef up their knowledge in two areas: energy and law.
School Energy Summit
KSBA is partnering with the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet, Department for Energy Development and Independence to host a two-day School Energy Summit next month at the Louisville Marriott East.
The summit is a continuation of KSBA’s School Energy Managers Project (SEMP) which has assisted schools over the past seven years to increase energy efficiency and help create more than $123 million in avoided costs for participating schools. The event will be open to representatives of all K-12 and postsecondary schools (public, private, in-state or out-of-state). Instructional leadership credit hours and training hours for school board members have been approved for this event.
Participants may register for both days ($200) or for a single day ($135 for May 9, $125 for May 10), and online registration is available on the KSBA website here. May 9 will include a choice of optional tours to examine energy efficiency designs/operations at a Jefferson County public school and the University of Louisville campus.

• Efficient design
• LED lighting options
• Controlling costs
• Engaging students
• Utility rebates (regional utilities in different sessions)
• Solar opportunities
• ENERGY STAR certification
• Leadership decisions
School law conference
KSBA’s annual federal and state school law update will take place June 8-9 at the Marriott Griffin Gate in Lexington.
While the conference program is still in development, areas certain to be included are updates on K-12 laws passed by the 2017 General Assembly and similar actions taken in the past year by the U.S. Congress. Regulatory changes at both the state and federal levels also will be addressed, as will the latest in court decisions that affect elementary and secondary education.
Look for online registration on the KSBA website homepage within the next few weeks. Board members who attend may earn Level Four and Level Five training requirements in the KSBA Academy of Studies.
